Karukera Stage Problems

My Trini News spotted a new fete in the line up for Carnival 2020 called Karukera One Love 2020. This was originally a music festival held in Guadeloupe. The fete being held on Carnival Friday is supposed to be the Trinidad and Tobago edition in conjunction with Caesar’s Army. One of the major draws of the event is the fact that the stage for the event is usually built in the sea. The event flyers indicated that the beach to be used would be Maracas Beach.

Maracas Beach is known for a difficult undercurrent and rough waves at different times of the day. Just this morning a video surfaced of a security guard saving two persons who were in trouble at the beach.

When the stage began construction last week different bodies such as UDECOTT began to indicate that the correct approvals have not been granted. The organizers countered indicating that the correct approvals have been obtained.

Then this morning the Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat indicated that no approval will be given for the stage to be built in the sea.

Having requested from the Commisisoner (sic) of State Lands a report on the construction of a Carnival fete stage on the Maracas seabed, I have instructed the Commisisoner (sic) in writing that no such construction should be permitted and any support given to the construction must be rescinded. The basis of my instruction was stated and this follows my oral instruction to that effect on January 30, 2020 when I heard informally of the plans of the event promoter. There has been no word of cancellation of the fete however the position of the stage continues to be an issue.

Major artistes are supposed to be performing at the event, including

  • Kes The Band
  • Elephant Man
